Genuine vs Fake Spare Parts: How Counterfeits Reach Your Appliance (and How to Catch Them)

The technician opens his bag, pulls out an RO membrane in shiny shrink-wrap, and quotes โ‚น900. The genuine part sells for โ‚น2,000โ€“2,800 in the open market. Nobody offers you a 60% discount out of kindness โ€” you have just been offered a counterfeit, and it is about to sit inside the machine your family drinks from.

India's spare-parts trade runs a thriving grey layer: industry estimates for counterfeit auto components have run as high as 25โ€“30%, and the appliance-parts market is even less policed. This guide shows where fakes come from, which parts are faked most often, and the doorstep checks that catch them before the panel closes.

How counterfeits reach your appliance

Fake parts do not arrive by accident. Wholesale electronics lanes in every metro sell look-alike membranes, capacitors and PCBs openly, at a third of genuine price. An independent technician who stocks up there pockets the difference when he bills you at near-genuine rates.

The second route is refurbishment: burnt motors rewound by hand, used membranes flushed and re-wrapped, dead PCBs revived with one swapped transistor โ€” all sold in fresh boxes as new. The third is the online listing with a genuine photo and a counterfeit in the courier bag, priced just low enough to tempt.

None of this needs a villainous technician. Many freelancers genuinely cannot tell refurbished from new, because their supplier cannot either. The fake usually enters the chain two steps before your doorbell rings.

The one-third rule: price gaps are the loudest tell

Genuine parts trade in narrow, discoverable price bands. A branded 75โ€“80 GPD RO membrane sits around โ‚น2,000โ€“2,800; an AC running capacitor at โ‚น400โ€“600; a decent washing machine motor at โ‚น2,500โ€“4,500. A "membrane" at one-third market price is a fake โ€” that gap is wider than any legitimate trade margin.

Check the band before the visit, not after. Two minutes on the brand's own spares page or any large marketplace gives you the reference price, and suspicion should trigger at anything more than 30โ€“40% below it. Bargains exist in this trade; 65% discounts do not.

Physical tells you can check at the doorstep

  • Sealing: genuine membranes arrive in sealed sanitary pouches, not loose shrink-wrap finished with a hair dryer
  • The box test: insist the box is opened in front of you โ€” a part unwrapped before it enters your house has already lost its proof

Why the fake always costs more

A counterfeit membrane at โ‚น900 against a genuine one at โ‚น2,400 looks like โ‚น1,500 saved. But the fake's performance decays in 3โ€“6 months instead of 12โ€“18, so you buy twice โ€” and your family drinks under-filtered water in between, which is the cost no invoice ever captures.
